Question

I have two Silver Sheens, one of which is now brown, and another next to it beginning to exude the same symptoms. First it started with curled leaves, never turning yellow going straight to brown. The first nursery suggested that I soak the tree, so I did. The following week the second one began showing signs of the same and it was the week of the heat. I noticed that the first one had what appeared to have some new growth, however I also noticed some round sap like areas. So again I went in search of what to do. Another person suggested putting gypsum in the soil and digging up the ground a bit. I did that as well, also treating the trees with a Bayer product called “Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed“. I am wondering in some of the research I have done online people said that these trees can get root rot, and recommend a fungicide called, “Alliette“. Can you recommend a different product? I have three more and don’t want to lose those as well. Please help my trees!

Answer

Every summer we get a lot of complaints about Silver Sheen dying or browning out. Sometimes the root balls become hydrophobic. I agree with a good deep soaking. Gypsum does help open the soil for water absorption. “Alliette” is good, as is “Subdue,” but both are very expensive. So if you do have Phytophthora (root rot caused by a water mold), use “Agrifos” and drench with that. The heat wave we had recently could have caused problems, and root rot is unlikely unless excessive irrigation in very heavy clay soil occurred.

Question

What fertilizer should I use for hybrid Bermuda?

Answer

We recommend using “Turf Royale 21-7-14” all year long. We sell them in 50lb. bags.

Question

Do you sell cedar chips? I heard it’s good as an insect repellant and I have tons of ants outside and many inside. If you do, what size are the bags and can you let me know the price? Unless you have something better I can use to deter ants.

Answer

We do carry cedar mulch in 2 cu.ft. bags. However, cedar mulch only discourages ants from nesting in the mulch. That does not mean, however, cedar mulch will keep ants away. According to a 2003 study published in the Journal of Economic Entomology, ants would willingly cross cedar mulch to find food, but fewer ants were found on trees surrounded by the mulch.

We recommend using ADVION Ant Gel. ADVION ant bait gel is specifically formulated to be tasty to all major species of ants. ADVION ant gel contains the new active ingredient, Indoxacarb, a powerful, non-repellent insecticide. The slight delay in death caused by Indoxacarb, encourages ants to eat the bait and return to the nest site to share the bait with other ants, eventually killing the entire colony. Use of Advion will help eliminate ants within days of application.

Question

I have a gopher problem in my yard. What are my options?

Answer

We recommend using bait call Omega Gopher Bait. We carry 1lb. containers.

Question

Do I need to remove my tomato plants at the end of each season?

Answer

Half the tomato disease battle in a vegetable garden is sanitation. As tomatoes end their production, remove them from the garden and take them to a landfill or dispose in your green trash container. Many diseases will over-winter on old infected leaves and stems. This is a good practice to do for any plants that may have had disease issues during the year.

Question

When is the best time to overseed your lawn?

Answer

Many homeowners like to overseed their lawns with ryegrass for a green winter lawn. Mid-September is the best time to do this.

Question

My tomatoes have dark, kind of sunken areas on the end of the tomato. What is this, and what can I do to stop it?

Answer

It’s always a good idea to bring in a sample so our OC Farm Supply experts can take a look and identify the problem. However, that sounds like blossom end rot. This is usually an indication of a calcium deficiency. Place a handful of gypsum in the soil beside the tomato at planting (or later) to prevent this. Foliar sprays such as blossom end rot spray will also help alleviate the problem. Nothing will “heal” the fruit with rot on it, so remove and discard them.

Also, erratic watering can also be the cause. When your plant is allowed to get too dry, or given too much water over a period of time, its ability to absorb calcium from the soil is diminished. Pay closer attention to your watering. Mulch to maintain adequate soil moisture levels, and plant blossom end rot susceptible crops such as tomatoes, squash, peppers and eggplant in well-draining, deep soil that has been amended with compost. Soil amended with plenty of organic matter will retain moisture better and supply plenty of nutrition to your plants. Consult with one of our OC Farm Supply specialists to determine which product to use in your garden.

Question

I was hoping you could help me out with some tips on fertilizing my lawn. I have St. Augustine and I’m having to water too much to keep it looking average at best. What would you recommend?

Answer

Apply Turf Royale Fertilizer every six weeks, 21-7-14, and water it 20 to 30 minutes once a week. This unique fertilizer is popular for is finely prilled granule that is homogenous, which means it has all its nutrients evenly distributed in each prill. It produces a fast, dark green-up for any turf area. It does not contain slow-release nitrogen.

Question

What do I do for aphids and powdery mildew on roses?

Answer

Use Neem Oil for aphids. Early detection is the key. Since the insects feed on sapping parts and leaves, they are largely found under the leaves. They are likely to secrete a sticky sweet substance that invites ants and other insects for protecting the eggs that are laid under the leaves and stalk of the plant. Neem Oil is regarded as the best for aphid treatment, and it is proven to control most of the species efficiently. Spraying Neem Oil on the lower half of the plant will also reduce the ants as well as the aphids.

For powdery mildew, try Green Cure fungicide, which is an organic solution that’s proven effective against powdery mildew, black spot, blights and other diseases. It is recommended for use on over 150 different flowers, trees, houseplants, fruits, vegetables and turfs.

Another product we recommend is Bayer All-in-One Rose & Flower Care. This has 3 systemic products in one that will help with insect control, disease control, and a fertilizer as well. This systemic rainproof protection lasts up to six weeks, and is convenient and easy to use – no spraying.

Question

Is there another solution besides Leaf Miner traps to get rid of them on trees?

Answer

Yes, there is a product called Bayer Systemic Fruit and Vegetable. This will provide systemic insect protection with a single application on fruit and nut trees, citrus, and vegetables listed on the label. This insecticide is absorbed through the roots and carried up the plant. Just mix and pour, no spraying needed.

Question

What is the best time to lay seed or sod for a new lawn?

Answer

October and April are the best months, because there are warm days and cool nights. These months are also the best for planting fruit trees.

“Sunset” magazine online cautions against laying sod lawns in very cold weather, which is rare in many parts of Southern California, so it might not be a consideration where you live. It also cautions against laying sod during the hottest part of the summer, as a new sod lawn needs lots of water and risks sunburn.

Question

Do you carry worms and earthworm castings.

Answer

Yes, we carry worms and yes, we carry earthworm castings.

Earthworms are great for more than just the castings they produce! The earthworm pushes through soft earth with the point of its head. In hard soil, the worm eats its way through, forming burrows, some several feet deep. Burrows loosen the soil, admitting air and water and helping roots grow. A single acre of land may be home to as many as 500,000 earthworms, each making the soil a better place for plants.

As an earthworm feeds, organic matter passes through its body and is excreted as granular dark castings. You may see these small casting piles in your garden. Worm castings are a wonderful fertilizer, rich in nutrients otherwise unavailable to plants.

Question

What kind of fertilizer is best to use on my lawn in the summer?

Answer

It is best to switch in the summer to a “time-release” fertilizer for your grass. Be more careful with products that release nitrogen quickly as they may burn your lawn more easily in the hot weather. Some of the best products to use are “Super Turf 25-5-5” or Lebanon “Pro-Scape 32-0-6.”

Question

My avocado tree is dying. What can I do?

Answer

Avocado trees can decline in health from a number of problems. Poor draining soil is the number one reason, or it’s in soil that has a pH outside of its preferred range. Diseases such as Anthracnose and Scab can also compromise the health of your avocado tree. First determine if the tree is planted in poorly draining soil, which makes it susceptible to diseases such as root rot.

Have your soil tested for pH. Avocado trees like a range between 6.0 to 6.5. If you see your tree experiencing yellowing leaves, stunted growth or overall declining health, this may be the reason.

Anthracnose is a serious fungal disease. Signs would include fruit lesions, which cause sunken areas, browning and black spots. Scab is caused by fungal spores, and the disease produces spots that are brown to purplish-brown in appearance. Check your tree in spring for Scab.

Bring a sample of your diseased leaves or fruit to OC Farm Supply, and one of our staff will be happy to help you figure out a plan of action to eradicate the problem.

Question

I’ve heard that I should be on the lookout for Citrus Leafminers starting around June. What do they look like, and how best to prevent them from attacking my citrus?

Answer

Citrus Leafminer is a very small, light-colored moth, less than ¼ inches long. The larvae feed by creating shallow tunnels, or mines, in young leaves of citrus trees. If you see squiggly silver lines on the bottom of your citrus leaves, it needs to be treated. A product that is highly recommended is called, “Spinosad.” It is a natural insecticide derived from a naturally occurring soil swelling bacterium. It is relatively fast-acting.

You can also use traps baited with a pheromones to detect leafminers, determining when moths are flying and depositing eggs. They do not catch enough of the population to be used for control, just to detect they are in the area and you can then take appropriate steps.

Question

What is the best soil to use for above ground planters, or what is called, “square-foot gardening”? I’ve heard of something called “Mel’s Mix”? What is that made up of?

Answer

“Mel’s Mix” is the creation of Mel Bartholemew, who is the creator of the “Square Foot Garden” method of gardening. He recommends filling your garden boxes with the following mix:

  • 1/3 Vermiculite
  • 1/3 Peat Moss
  • 1/3 Enriched Compost

If you’d rather not have to mix it yourself, we also sell a product here at OC Farm Supply called, “PRO-MIX®” that is used by professional growers. PRO-MIX® is the ultimate peat/compost-based growing mix specially formulated for growing organic vegetables, fruits, and flowers. It is enhanced with Mycorise®. Here are some of the reasons why you would want to use either “Mel’s Mix” or “PRO-MIX®:”

  • Planting & germination: Mel’s Mix or Pro-Mix is much lighter than dirt, and it doesn’t get compacted down. This allows seeds to push through easier.
  • Root Systems: It’s really easy for roots to grow and spread.
  • Weeds: You’ll be saying, “What weeds?” As long as you are careful with the compost you get, there are no weeds in the mix (as in Gardner & Bloome’s Harvest Supreme, or PRO-MIX®).
  • Drainage: You cannot overwater. The easiest method is to use a drip system, but you can hand water as well. Drains so well, you don’t have to worry about overwatering.
  • When you use “Mel’s Mix” or “PRO-MIX®,” you don’t have to amend the soil every time you plant, just add a trowel of compost with each new planting. Also, you do not have to rotate crops.

Question

Do you sell a vertical herb/veggie box?

Answer

Question

Is there anything I can do to prevent olives from forming on my olive tree? They make such a mess when they drop off the tree.

Answer

Between late March and May the olive trees will flower. When the flowers open up, you need to spray the flowers with a product called, “Florel.” This will stop the fruiting process.

Question

Lately a couple of avocado trees have died for no apparent reason.

Answer

Sounds like “root rot,” more scientifically known as “Phytophthora.” A great product to use is called, Agri-Fos, a systemic fungicide. You may take a sample to the local agricultural extension to be analyzed a bit more thoroughly than we can here.

Agri-Fos is a unique fungicide with curative and protective activity against many pathogens of agricultural, nursery, greenhouse, landscape ornamentals, turf and lawns. It is quickly absorbed by plant foliage and roots and is distributed systemically throughout the plant. Once inside it turns on the natural defense mechanisms of the plant to resist invasion by disease causing pathogens. If diseases are already present it helps the plant to kill the pathogen invaders by curative activity while protecting new growth.

Biorational Agri-Fos was approved by the Biopesticide Division of E.P.A. as a biorational fungicide. It has minimal impact on the environment. There is little concern for public exposure to surface residues because active ingredients readily disappear into plant tissues. Even though low risk, normal precautions should be followed by the applicator since the product is high in soluble phosphite salts. Do not spray bodies of water or where runoff may occur. See label for precautions.

What does Agri-Fos control?

  • Phytophtora
  • Pythium
  • Downy Mildews
  • Rusts
  • Xanthomonas
  • Erwinia
